9 Estimates of Wildland Fire Emissions

چکیده
Wildland fire missions can significantly affect regional and global air quality, radiation, climate, and the carbon cycle. A fundamental and yet challenging prerequisite to understanding the environment.al effects is to accurately estimate fire emissions. This chapter descnbes and analyzes fire emission calculations. Various techniques (field measurements, empirical relations, modeling, and remote sensing) to obtain fuel and fire properties are first reviewed. A calculation of fire emissions across the continental U.S. is then illustrated. In this calculation, an approach recently developed based on high-resolution fuel types from satellite remote sensing is used for fuel loading factors. The burning information is obtained from a historical fire dataset collected by multiple U.S. governmental agencies. The U.S. fire emissions show large spatial and temporal variability. Finally, uncertainties in fire emission estimates are examined by comparing with another method using the traditional AP-42 Table approach for fuel loading. Emissions with the satellite remote sensing approach are mostly reduced in the western U .S., but increased in the eastern coastal regions. A perspective on future fire emission research is given.

Variability of wildland fire emissions across the contiguous United States
This study analyzes spatial and temporal variability of emissions from wildland fires across the contiguous US. The emissions are estimates based on a recently constructed dataset of historical fire records collected by multiple US governlnental agencies. Both wildfire and prescribed fires have the highest emissions over the Pacific coastal states. Prescribed fire emissions are also found to be...
متن کاملQuantification of pollutants emitted from very large wildland fires in Southern California, USA
This study investigates the efficacy of the first order fire effects model (FOFEM) implemented in a geographic information system for wildland fire emissions estimation. The objective of the study was to quantify the source and composition of smoke and emissions from wildland fires that burned 235,267 ha in Southern California, USA, in October 2003. From inputs of vegetation, fuel model data, w...
متن کاملChemical Composition of Wildland Fire Emissions
Wildland fires are major sources of trace gases and aerosol, and these emissions are believed to significantly influence the chemical composition of the atmosphere and the earth’s climate system. The wide variety of pollutants released by wildland fire include greenhouse gases, photochemically reactive compounds, and fine and coarse particulate matter. Through direct emissions and secondary che...
متن کاملPrehistoric fire area and emissions from California’s forests, woodlands, shrublands, and grasslands
In the majority of US political settings wildland fire is still discussed as a negative force. Lacking from current wildfire discussions are estimates of the spatial extent of fire and their resultant emissions before the influences of Euro-American settlement and this is the focus of this work. We summarize the literature on fire history (fire rotation and fire return intervals) and past Nativ...

This paper provides an overview and summary of the current state of knowledge regarding critical atmospheric processes that affect the distribution and concentrations of greenhouse gases and aerosols emitted from wildland fires or produced through subsequent chemical reactions in the atmosphere. These critical atmospheric processes include the dynamics of plume rise, chemical reactions involvin...
